| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the life of United States Army Major Richard D. |
2 | Winters, who died on January 2, 2011. |
3 | WHEREAS, Although the heroism of United States Army Major |
4 | Richard D. Winters did not receive international acclaim until |
5 | the release of the television mini-series "Band of Brothers" in |
6 | 2001, all who knew of his valor and outstanding leadership were |
7 | not surprised that his exploits and the exploits of the men of |
8 | his company were chosen to be featured in this series; and |
9 | WHEREAS, The "Band of Brothers" mini-series documented the |
10 | story of E "Easy" Company of 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne |
11 | Division, and their missions in Europe during World War II from |
12 | the beginning of their training in 1942 for Operation Overlord, |
13 | as the days involving D-Day were called, through V-J, or Victory |
14 | over Japan, Day on August 15, 1945; and |

1 | WHEREAS, The company parachuted behind enemy lines in the |
2 | early hours of D-Day, on June 6, 1944, in support of Americans |
3 | landing at Utah Beach, participated in the liberation of |
4 | Carentan, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, again parachuted |
5 | into action during Operation Market Garden, liberated a |
6 | concentration camp at Dachau and were the first to enter Adolph |
7 | Hitler's mountain retreat in Berchtesgaden; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Easy Company's story is an exemplary tale of |
9 | comradeship that is, in summary, a tale of ordinary men who did |
10 | extraordinary things; and |
11 | WHEREAS, The man in charge of Easy Company was a young |
12 | lieutenant from Palmyra and a graduate of Franklin and Marshall |
13 | College whose extraordinary planning, commanding and fighting on |
14 | D-Day in Nazi-occupied Normandy, during his regiment's first |
15 | combat operation, saved countless lives and expedited the Allies |
16 | landing and inland advance; |
17 | WHEREAS, With his company outnumbered by German soldiers, |
18 | young Winters destroyed German guns at Brecourt Manor and |
19 | secured causeways for troops coming off Utah Beach; and |
20 | WHEREAS, Major Winters' tactics and strategy for a small-unit |
21 | assault on German artillery have been taught in the days since |
22 | WWII at the United States Military Academy at West Point; and |
23 | WHEREAS, His wisdom and courage throughout the remaining days |
24 | of the war inspired his service colleagues through example and |
25 | effectively maneuvered his company during the campaign for the |
26 | liberation of Europe; and |
27 | WHEREAS, After the war, Major Winters returned to central |
28 | Pennsylvania, married and, with his wife Ethel, raised two |
29 | children on their farm near Fredericksburg while working in the |
30 | agricultural feed business; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Major Winters died on January 2, 2011, at the age of |
2 | 92, still exemplifying the quiet American hero who personifies |
3 | greatness and inspires others by his understanding of courage, |
4 | honesty, virtue and the difference between right and wrong; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is justifiably proud of this native |
6 | son; therefore be it |
7 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life of |
8 | United States Army Major Richard D. Winters, who died on January |
9 | 2, 2011. |
