HOUSE RESOLUTION

INTRODUCED BY WHITE, D. COSTA, DEASY, DiGIROLAMO, GEORGE, KORTZ, MANN, MATZIE, MILLARD, PAYTON, RAVENSTAHL, READSHAW, SABATINA, VULAKOVICH, FABRIZIO, GIBBONS AND CALTAGIRONE, JANUARY 24, 2011

INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JANUARY 24, 2011  

A RESOLUTION

Designating February 12, 2011, as "I Got Snagged 4 Jimmy V Day"

in Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, On February 12, 2011, the Circle K Club of Duquesne

University will again host the "I Got Snagged 4 Jimmy V," a snag

golf sporting event, which is the single largest on-campus

fundraiser for the V Foundation, whose purpose is to raise funds

for cancer research; and

WHEREAS, Circle K clubs are part of Kiwanis International,

comprised of college and university students who make a lifelong

commitment to community service; and

WHEREAS, Jimmy V stands for Jimmy Valvano, the legendary

former coach of the North Carolina State men's basketball team

and award-winning broadcaster, who passed away in April 1993,

less than one year after receiving a diagnosis of terminal

cancer; and

WHEREAS, Jimmy Valvano spent the final months of his life

advocating for victims of this horrendous disease and forging a

partnership with ESPN for the purpose of establishing the V

Foundation for Cancer Research; and

WHEREAS, Since 1994, the V Foundation through its Scientific

Advisory Board, which is comprised of leading physicians and

research scientists from across the country, has awarded more

than 100 V Scholar grants to promising young scientists whose

cancer research projects have the most potential; and

WHEREAS, Of those V Scholars, 93% have received additional

funding and are still working in independent labs, and 5% are

currently working in related research; and

WHEREAS, The V Foundation, which has raised more than $90

million for cancer research, utilizes an endowment for

administrative expenses and donates 100% of all new cash

donations and net proceeds from events to research and related

programs; and

WHEREAS, The V Foundation is ranked among the 2% of the

nation's charities that have received the top rating of four

stars from Charity Navigator, the largest evaluator of charities

in the country; and

WHEREAS, The V Foundation for Cancer Research is guided by

the legacy of one man that refused to give up in the face of his

battle against cancer, embracing his call for action, love of

people and the courage to find hope even in despair; therefore

be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate

February 12, 2011, as "I Got Snagged 4 Jimmy V Day" in

Pennsylvania and recognize the efforts of the Circle K Club of

Duquesne University; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all citizens

of this Commonwealth to show support for cancer research through

donations or volunteering of their time to this worthy cause.
