A RESOLUTION

Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives with

2

respect to the tragic shooting in Tucson, Arizona, on January

3

8, 2011.

4

WHEREAS, On January 8, 2011, an armed gunman opened fire at a

5

"Congress on Your Corner" event hosted by United States

6

Representative Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Arizona, killing

7

six and wounding at least 14 others; and

8

WHEREAS, The Honorable John Roll, Christina Taylor Green,

9

Dorothy Morris, Phyllis Schneck, Dorwan Stoddard and Gabriel

10

Zimmerman lost their lives in this attack; and

11

WHEREAS, Christina Taylor Green, who was the nine-year-old

12

daughter of John and Roxanna Green and granddaughter of former

13

Philadelphia Phillies manager Dallas Green, was born on

14

September 11, 2001, and was a third grader with an avid interest

15

in government who was recently elected to the student council at

Mesa Verde Elementary School; and

2

WHEREAS, The Honorable John Roll, a Pennsylvania native who

3

was 63 years of age, began his professional career as a bailiff

4

in 1972, was appointed to the Federal bench in 1991 by President

5

George H. W. Bush, became chief judge for the District of

6

Arizona in 2006, and was a devoted husband to his wife, Maureen,

7

father to his three sons and grandfather to his five

8

grandchildren; and

9

WHEREAS, United States Representative Gabrielle Giffords was

10

a target of this attack and remains in critical condition at an

11

Arizona hospital; and

12

WHEREAS, Representative Giffords became the youngest woman

13

elected to the Arizona Senate in 2002, the third Congresswoman

14

to represent the state of Arizona in 2006 and the first Jewish-

15

American Congresswoman to represent her state; and

16

WHEREAS, On January 7, 2011, Representative Giffords urged

17

centrism and moderation in the public political discourse; and

18

WHEREAS, This tragic shooting occurred a week before the

19

commemoration of the Martin Luther King, Jr., national holiday,

20

in honor of a man who stood for peace and for resolving

21

differences without violence; therefore be it

22

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives hereby condemn,

23

in the strongest possible terms, the horrific attack which

24

occurred at the "Congress on Your Corner" event hosted by United

25

States Representative Gabrielle Giffords in Tuscon, Arizona, on

26

January 8, 2011; and be it further

27

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives offer its

28

heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of

29

those who were killed in that attack; and be it further

30

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express its hope

for the rapid and complete recovery of those wounded in the

2

shooting; and be it further

3

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the memory

4

of the Honorable John Roll, Christina Taylor Green, Dorothy

5

Morris, Phyllis Schneck, Dorwan Stoddard and Gabriel Zimmerman;

6

and be it further

7

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives applaud the

8

bravery and quick thinking exhibited by those individuals who

9

prevented the gunman from potentially taking more lives and

10

helped to save those who had been wounded; and be it further

11

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

12

service of the first responders who raced to the scene and the

13

health care professionals who tended to the victims once they

14

reached the hospital, whose service and skill saved lives; and

15

be it further

16

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives reaffirm the

17

bedrock principle of American democracy and representative

18

government, which is memorialized in the First Amendment of the

19

Constitution of the United States and which Representative

20

Giffords herself read in the Hall of the United States House of

21

Representatives on January 6, 2011, of "the right of the people

22

peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a

23

redress of grievances"; and be it further

24

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives stand firm in its

25

belief in a democracy in which all can participate and in which

26

intimidation and threats of violence cannot silence the voices

27

of any American; and be it further

28

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the service

29

and leadership of United States Representative Gabrielle

30

Giffords as she courageously fights to recover.
