| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating March 21, 2011, as "William Randolph 'Sonny' Hill |
2 | Day" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, William Randolph "Sonny" Hill was born and raised in |
4 | Philadelphia; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Mr. Hill graduated from Northeast High School and |
6 | later attended college before joining the semiprofessional |
7 | Eastern Basketball League, a league where most gifted African- |
8 | American basketball players were welcomed; and |
9 | WHEREAS, In 1960, Mr. Hill enlisted the assistance of fellow |
10 | Philadelphia athletes Guy Rodgers, Ray Scott, Hal Lear and Wilt |
11 | Chamberlain to establish the Charles Baker Memorial Basketball |
12 | League, an off-season confederation of professional basketball |
13 | players who converge on Philadelphia from all over the country |
14 | to display their talent and skill; and |
15 | WHEREAS, In 1968, Mr. Hill was inspired to found the Sonny |

1 | Hill Community Involvement League during a time when |
2 | Philadelphia was plagued by turbulent gang warfare and hundreds |
3 | of youth succumbed to the violent streets; and |
4 | WHEREAS, The Sonny Hill Community Involvement League served |
5 | as a safe haven for Delaware Valley youth and continues to |
6 | generate great athletes while offering them refuge from the |
7 | pervasive urban street culture; and |
8 | WHEREAS, The Sonny Hill Community Involvement League closely |
9 | tracks the academic progress of its players, provides tutorial |
10 | services and career counseling and boasts a college admission |
11 | rate of 85% among its players; and |
12 | WHEREAS, In 2008, Mr. Hill was honored by the Naismith |
13 | Basketball Hall of Fame with the Mannie Jackson Human Spirit |
14 | Award, an award designed to honor those who have incorporated |
15 | basketball into their efforts to contribute to the greater good |
16 | of society; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Breaking down barriers on and off the basketball |
18 | court, Mr. Hill was CBS's first African-American commentator for |
19 | NBA games; and |
20 | WHEREAS, Mr. Hill currently hosts his own radio show every |
21 | Sunday on WIP AM Sport Radio and serves as executive advisor to |
22 | the Philadelphia 76ers; therefore be it |
23 | RESOLVED, That in recognition of the tremendous impact and |
24 | trailblazing accomplishments of William Randolph "Sonny" Hill, |
25 | the House of Representatives designate March 21, 2011, as |
26 | "William Randolph 'Sonny' Hill Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it |
27 | further |
28 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives extend its |
29 | appreciation to William Randolph "Sonny" Hill for the |
30 | significant contributions he has made to the lives of tens of |
