PRINTER'S NO.  4049

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF PENNSYLVANIA

HOUSE BILL

No.

2629

Session of

2012

INTRODUCED BY TALLMAN, DALEY, HESS, MIRABITO, READSHAW, ROCK, STABACK, SWANGER AND VITALI, SEPTEMBER 24, 2012

REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON STATE GOVERNMENT, SEPTEMBER 24, 2012

AN ACT

1

Selecting, designating and adopting Pennsylvania sweet corn as

2

the official vegetable of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

3

The General Assembly finds and declares that:

4

(1)  Sweet corn is the leading vegetable crop in this

5

Commonwealth.

6

(2)  Pennsylvania sweet corn production ranks in the top

7

ten nationally with more than 20,000 acres worth about $25

8

million annually.

9

(3)  About 90% of the sweet corn acreage is grown for

10

fresh market sales.

11

(4)  The key to great tasting sweet corn is freshness

12

because the sugar in sweet corn rapidly begins turning to

13

starch within hours of being harvested.

14

(5)  In the days of increasing food and fuel costs, sweet

15

corn represents a real food dollar bargain available at

16

economical prices at the height of the season in August.

17

(6)  Sweet corn is a delicious ingredient in many recipes

18

or on its own.

1

The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

2

hereby enacts as follows:

3

Section 1.  Official State vegetable.

4

Pennsylvania sweet corn is hereby selected, designated and

5

adopted as the official vegetable of the Commonwealth of

6

Pennsylvania.

7

Section 2.  Effective date.

8

This act shall take effect immediately.
