| AN ACT |
| |
1 | Redesignating the bridge on State Route 322 over North Fork |
2 | Creek in Brookville Borough, Jefferson County, as the Purple |
3 | Heart Memorial Bridge of Jefferson County. |
4 | Section 1. Purple Heart Memorial Bridge of Jefferson County. |
5 | (a) Declaration of policy.--The General Assembly finds and |
6 | declares as follows: |
7 | (1) In 1782, General George Washington created the Badge |
8 | of Military Merit to honor soldiers wounded or killed in |
9 | action. The first award was given to three soldiers in |
10 | Newburgh, New York. |
11 | (2) The current award, which is officially named the |
12 | Military Order of the Purple Heart, was developed by General |
13 | Douglas MacArthur in 1932. |
14 | (3) The Purple Heart is awarded under the name of the |
15 | President of the United States to members of the United |
16 | States Armed Forces who are wounded by an instrument of war |
17 | in the hands of the enemy or posthumously to the next of kin |
18 | in the name of those who are killed in action or die of |
19 | wounds received in action. |

1 | (4) To date, the Purple Heart has been awarded to more |
2 | than 1.7 million individuals who have served in World War I, |
3 | World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian |
4 | Gulf War, Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi |
5 | Freedom. |
6 | (5) Jefferson County is home to many current and former |
7 | members of the United States Armed Forces, including numerous |
8 | Purple Heart recipients, who have served their local |
9 | community and their country with distinction and honor. |
10 | (b) Redesignation.--The bridge carrying State Route 322 over |
11 | North Fork Creek in Brookville Borough, Jefferson County, known |
12 | as the Blake's Hardware Bridge, is redesignated as the Jefferson |
13 | County Purple Heart Memorial Bridge. |
14 | (c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and |
15 | maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the bridge to |
16 | traffic in both directions on the bridge. |
17 | Section 2. Effective date. |
18 | This act shall take effect in 60 days. |
