A RESOLUTION

Supporting a United Ireland.

2

WHEREAS, Ireland and its people comprise an ancient and

3

distinct island nation, and the people of Ireland have a right

4

and the responsibility to govern themselves; and

5

WHEREAS, Human and civil rights derive "their just powers

6

from the consent of the governed" and are best guaranteed by

7

people freely elected by democratic means to an independent

8

government; and

9

WHEREAS, The logic of history, international law, human

10

rights and peace dictate the reunification of the island of

11

Ireland, and the reality of the moment in the Peace Process, the

12

Good Friday Agreement, the Devolved Assembly and the development

13

of the All-Ireland institutions of governance attest to this

14

momentum; and

15

WHEREAS, In the past, the General Assembly adopted the

16

MacBride Principles for Northern Ireland and strongly endorsed

17

passage of the Good Friday Agreement among the previously

warring parties, in part because of the dedication and

2

bipartisan support of three separate presidents of the United

3

States, in seeing the Good Friday Agreement to fruition and

4

formation of the Assembly; and

5

WHEREAS, The contributions of the Irish born and Irish

6

Americans, to the United States of America and this Commonwealth

7

are legion; and

8

WHEREAS, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is home to a

9

significant percentage of Americans whose ancestors migrated in

10

times of famine and war to seek a better life but in whose

11

hearts still desire peace and unification for their ancestral

12

home; therefore be it

13

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Pennsylvania strongly support a

14

United Ireland by supporting those peaceful political actions

15

that will result in the final reunification of Ireland; and be

16

it further

17

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to

18

President Barack Obama; Vice President Joseph Biden; United

19

States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; all members of the

20

Pennsylvania Congressional Delegation; the Governor of

21

Pennsylvania; the Honorable Andrew Rooney, the United States

22

Ambassador to Ireland; and the Taoiseach and President of

23

Ireland.
