A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the week of May 8 through 16, 2010, as

2

"National Travel and Tourism Week" in Pennsylvania and April

3

21, 2010, as "Tourism Day" in Pennsylvania.

4

WHEREAS, The week of May 8 through 16, 2010, has been

5

selected as "National Travel and Tourism Week"; and

6

WHEREAS, "National Travel and Tourism Week" was established

7

in 1983 when the Congress of the United States passed a joint

8

resolution designating a week in May 1984 as "National Tourism

9

Week," and, in a White House ceremony, President Ronald Reagan

10

signed a Presidential Proclamation urging citizens to observe

11

the week with appropriate ceremonies and activities; and

12

WHEREAS, Highlighting the fact that "Travel Matters,"

13

organizations across the nation are emphasizing the jobs and

14

benefits that travel and tourism bring to our economies. In the

15

United States, tourism employs more than 7 million people in

16

this country, and more than 50 million international tourists

17

visit the United States every year, generating more than $120

billion for the economy of this country; and

2

WHEREAS, On April 21, tourism industry leaders from across

3

the State will take part in "Pennsylvania Tourism Day" to

4

provide an opportunity to share their perspective on key issues

5

impacting their business and employees; and

6

WHEREAS, Tourism is Pennsylvania's second-largest industry

7

and a major contributor to the economy of this Commonwealth,

8

providing approximately $28 billion in revenue, $10.7 billion in

9

wages and benefits, and accounting for nearly 7% of all

10

individuals employed in this State with a work force of 400,000

11

people; and

12

WHEREAS, Even more notable, in this economy, tourism has

13

proven itself to be a growth industry while others in the State

14

and nation are in decline. Pennsylvania remains the 4th most

15

visited State in the country; therefore be it

16

RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of May 8 through

17

16, 2010, as "National Travel and Tourism Week" in Pennsylvania

18

and April 21, 2010, as "Tourism Day" in Pennsylvania.
