A RESOLUTION

Expressing sadness on the passing of Miep Gies and honoring her

2

memory.

WHEREAS, Miep Gies was born on February 15, 1909; and

4

WHEREAS, Miep Gies passed away January 11, 2010, at 100 years

5

of age; and

6

WHEREAS, Miep Gies was the last surviving protector of Anne

7

Frank, whose diary, "Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl" has

8

been read by millions of Pennsylvania school children over the

9

last half-century; and

10

WHEREAS, History's most heroic acts often have been performed

11

not by leaders in government, education or religion, but by

12

ordinary individuals with extraordinary courage; and

13

WHEREAS, Miep Gies, her late husband Jan Gies and three

14

fellow protectors of Anne Frank risked death by protecting Anne

15

Frank, her family and four other Dutch Jews, thus demonstrating

16

a supreme level of humanity and selflessness; and

17

WHEREAS, "Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl" will

continue to be read by and inspire Pennsylvania school children

2

for decades to come; therefore be it

3

RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the life and memory of Miep

4

Gies, whose life will forever serve as a testament to mankind's

5

potential.
