SENATOR VANCE, PUBLIC HEALTH AND WELFARE, AS AMENDED, JUNE 22, 2010   

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Memorializing the President of the United States and members of

<--

the Congress of the United States to maintain funding for

3

mammograms for women beginning at 40 years of age.

4

Urging the United States Preventive Services Task Force to

<--

5

reexamine its recommendations on mammograms for women

6

beginning at 40 years of age.

7

WHEREAS, Congress is currently discussing health care reform;

8

and

9

WHEREAS, Part of the discussion is about determining what

10

services will be covered and which will not be covered; and

11

WHEREAS, A recent study by the United States Preventative 

<--

12

Preventive Services Task Force states in its recommendations

<--

13

that women in their 40s do not need a mammogram and that self-

14

examinations hold no value; and

15

WHEREAS, This information is troubling, given that nearly all

16

breast cancers can be treated successfully if found early; and

17

WHEREAS, When breast cancer is found at the earliest stage,

18

the five-year survival rate is 98%; and

WHEREAS, Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in

2

Pennsylvania for women between 25 and 54 years of age; and

3

WHEREAS, The purpose of making changes to the structure and

4

system of health care in the United States is to provide the

5

necessary resources to patients, not to take away care and

6

services; therefore be it

7

RESOLVED, That the members of the Senate of Pennsylvania

8

encourage our elected officials in Washington, D.C., to keep the

funding of mammograms intact as the health care debate moves

10

forward; and be it further

11

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

12

the President of the United States and the Pennsylvania

13

Congressional Delegation. strongly urge the United States

<--

14

Preventive Services Task Force to reexamine its recommendations

15

for mammograms for women to take into account the importance in

16

maintaining a health care policy of prevention which provides

17

for mammograms for women beginning at 40 years of age; and be it

18

further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

20

the United States Preventive Services Task Force.
