| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Memorializing the President of the United States and members of |
2 | the Congress of the United States to maintain funding for |
3 | mammograms for women beginning at 40 years of age. |
4 | WHEREAS, Congress is currently discussing health care reform; |
5 | and |
6 | WHEREAS, Part of the discussion is about determining what |
7 | services will be covered and which will not be covered; and |
8 | WHEREAS, A recent study by the United States Preventative |
9 | Services Task Force states in its recommendations that women in |
10 | their 40s do not need a mammogram and that self-examinations |
11 | hold no value; and |
12 | WHEREAS, This information is troubling, given that nearly all |
13 | breast cancers can be treated successfully if found early; and |
14 | WHEREAS, When breast cancer is found at the earliest stage, |
15 | the five-year survival rate is 98%; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in |
17 | Pennsylvania for women between 25 and 54 years of age; and |
18 | WHEREAS, The purpose of making changes to the structure and |

1 | system of health care in the United States is to provide the |
2 | necessary resources to patients, not to take away care and |
3 | services; therefore be it |
4 | RESOLVED, That the members of the Senate of Pennsylvania |
5 | encourage our elected officials in Washington, D.C., to keep the |
6 | funding of mammograms intact as the health care debate moves |
7 | forward; and be it further |
8 | RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to |
9 | the President of the United States and the Pennsylvania |
10 | Congressional Delegation. |
