A RESOLUTION

Designating September 26, 2009, as "Mesothelioma Awareness Day"

2

in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Thousands of Americans die each year from

4

mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer that attacks the linings of

5

the lungs, abdomen, heart or testicles; and

6

WHEREAS, According to the Centers for Disease Control and

7

Prevention, malignant mesothelioma is a fatal cancer primarily

8

associated with exposure to asbestos; and

9

WHEREAS, The heavy use of asbestos in manufacturing, industry

10

and construction has been recognized as the worst occupational

11

health disaster in United States history; and

12

WHEREAS, Asbestos was used in the construction of virtually

13

all office buildings, public schools and homes built before

14

1975; and

15

WHEREAS, A high percentage of all mesothelioma victims were

16

exposed to asbestos on Naval ships and in shipyards; and

17

WHEREAS, It is believed that many of the firefighters, police

officers and rescue workers from Ground Zero in New York City on

2

September 11, 2001, may be at increased risk of contracting

3

mesothelioma; and

4

WHEREAS, This Commonwealth, including, in particular, the

5

City of Philadelphia and the surrounding counties, have an

6

incidence rate of mesothelioma that exceeds the national

7

average; and

8

WHEREAS, Even incidental exposure to asbestos is sufficient

9

to cause cancer as long as 30 years later; and

10

WHEREAS, The lack of sufficient research to advance effective

11

treatments for mesothelioma has led to inadequate treatment for

12

those stricken with the disease and has resulted in a situation

13

where the majority of mesothelioma patients succumb to the

14

disease within a mere 12 to 15 months from the time of

15

diagnosis; and

16

WHEREAS, In 1999, the Mesothelioma Applied Research

17

Foundation was formed to eradicate the life-ending and vicious

18

effects of mesothelioma, and progress in developing effective

19

treatments for the disease is now being made; and

20

WHEREAS, The establishment of Mesothelioma Awareness Day

21

would raise public awareness of the disease and of the need to

22

develop effective treatments for it; therefore by it

23

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate September 26, 2009, as

24

"Mesothelioma Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
