A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of September 2010 as "Craniofacial

2

Acceptance Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Approximately 100,000 babies are born each year with

4

a facial disfiguring condition of the head or face; and

5

WHEREAS, Individuals with facial differences are often

6

discriminated against and encounter social isolation; and

7

WHEREAS, Individuals with craniofacial differences often

8

suffer from low self-esteem due to their physical appearance;

9

and

10

WHEREAS, Most people do not realize individuals with facial

11

disfigurement often endure as many as 30 to 40 surgeries before

12

they reach adulthood; and

13

WHEREAS, Families of a member who has a craniofacial

14

condition undergo substantial strain due to the emotional and

financial demands resulting from ongoing and expensive medical

2

treatment; and

3

WHEREAS, The general public lacks education and information

4

about individuals with facial differences; and

5

WHEREAS, The Children's Craniofacial Association is a not-

6

for-profit organization dedicated to empowering and giving hope

7

to individuals and families affected by facial differences and

8

fostering a world where all people are accepted for who they

9

are, not how they look; and

10

WHEREAS, The Children's Craniofacial Association has

11

designated September as "Craniofacial Acceptance Month,"

12

recognizing that "Beyond the Face is a Heart"; therefore be it

13

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

14

month of September 2010 as "Craniofacial Acceptance Month" in

15

Pennsylvania.
