REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON VETERANS AFFAIRS AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS, JUNE 30, 2010

A RESOLUTION

1

Declaring that Iran's nuclear weapons program represents a

2

severe threat to American national interest and memorializing

3

the President and the Congress of the United States to take

4

immediate action to ensure that Iran does not attain nuclear

5

capability.

6

WHEREAS, A nuclear-armed Iran would likely lead to nuclear

7

proliferation elsewhere in the region and around the globe and

8

would pose unacceptable threats to global security while

9

fundamentally altering the strategic balance of the Middle East;

10

and

11

WHEREAS, In defiance of United Nations Security Council

12

resolutions, Iran has refused to hold serious talks with the

13

United States and other world powers while continuing to enrich

14

uranium; and

15

WHEREAS, Iran dismissed the 2009 end-of-the-year deadline set

16

by the administration and its allies for Tehran to accept a deal

17

offered by the United Nations to export the majority of its

1

enriched uranium in exchange for nuclear fuel; and

2

WHEREAS, Iran continues to aggressively expand its nuclear

3

capabilities, rather than suspend its enrichment of uranium as

4

required by multiple United Nations Security Council

5

resolutions; therefore be it

6

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the

7

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urge the President and the Congress

8

of the United States to reaffirm boldly and unambiguously that

9

the United States can and will prevent Iran from acquiring a

10

nuclear weapons capability, reverse the practice under which the

11

United States government has awarded at least $107 billion over

12

the past decade in Federal contracts to companies investing in

13

or doing business in Iran and join with those allies who are

14

prepared for action to immediately impose crippling sanctions on

15

Iran; and be it further

16

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the United

17

States government to enforce the Iran Sanctions Act, originally

18

passed in 1996, and sanction foreign entities investing more

19

than $20 million a year in Iran's energy sector and that a

20

congressional conference committee be formed to meld the Senate

21

and House of Representatives versions of legislation for final

22

passage of sanction legislation.
