A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life and expressing condolences upon the death of

2

Airman 1st Class Austin Gates-Benson, who died on May 3,

3

2010, while serving his country in Afghanistan.

4

WHEREAS, Airman 1st Class Austin Gates-Benson was a resident

5

of Hellertown and a 2008 graduate of Saucon Valley High School;

6

and 

7

WHEREAS, Airman 1st Class Gates-Benson joined the United

8

States Air Force shortly after graduating from high school and

9

volunteered for duty in Afghanistan; and 

10

WHEREAS, Airman 1st Class Gates-Benson served with the 54th

Combat Communications Squadron attached to Robins Air Force Base

2

in Georgia and was serving along the Kyber Pass near Torkham,

3

Afghanistan; and

4

WHEREAS, On May 3, 2010, he died unexpectedly from noncombat-

5

related injuries and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery

6

on June 4, 2010; and

7

WHEREAS, Former Saucon Valley High School principal Todd

8

Gombos described Airman 1st Class Gates-Benson as an independent

9

thinker, an advocate for others and a young man who was going to

10

do something with his life; and

11

WHEREAS, A high school athlete, he had the unique opportunity

12

to appear in the movie "Stepmom" as a stunt double because of

13

his horseback riding abilities; and

14

WHEREAS, Airman 1st Class Gates-Benson is survived by his

15

mother, Joie Gates; his father, Frederick J. Boenig; a half-

16

brother, Search D. Willson; maternal grandparents Lois and Milo

17

E. Benson; and his paternal grandmother, Elaine L. Blair; and

18

WHEREAS, It is fitting to commend the patriotic

19

contributions Airman 1st Class Gates-Benson made, to be saddened

20

by his death and to honor the supreme sacrifice he paid on

21

behalf of this nation and this Commonwealth; therefore be it

22

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life

23

and express condolences upon the death of Airman 1st Class

24

Austin Gates-Benson, who paid the supreme sacrifice on May 3,

25

2010, while serving his country in Afghanistan.
