A RESOLUTION

Honoring the Borough of Tioga on its 150th anniversary.

2

WHEREAS, The Borough of Tioga is located west of the center

3

of Tioga Township at the confluence of Crooked Creek and the

4

Tioga River on an oblong strip known as the "Island"; and

5

WHEREAS, While Jesse Losey was the first settler on the site

6

of the Borough of Tioga, Dr. William Willard and his son William

7

Willard, Jr. were the most active in the development of the

8

site; and

9

WHEREAS, The Tioga post office, established January 1, 1805,

10

is the oldest in Tioga County; and

11

WHEREAS, The First Baptist Church of Tioga, incorporated

12

March 17, 1842, is the oldest regularly organized church in

Tioga County; and

WHEREAS, The Borough of Tioga experienced a massive fire on

3

February 9, 1871, and a great flood that threatened the

4

destruction of the town on June 1, 1889, and residents wisely

5

implemented precautions to prevent a repetition of such

6

disasters; and

7

WHEREAS, The merchants, manufacturers and tradesmen who

8

located in Tioga prior to its incorporation as a borough

9

persevered through hardships to make a better life for

10

themselves and their families; and

11

WHEREAS, Tioga was incorporated as a borough on February

12

1860; and

13

WHEREAS, The population of the Borough of Tioga as of July

14

2008 is 582; therefore be it

15

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the Borough

16

of Tioga on its 150th anniversary.
