A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of June 2010 as "Dairy Farmers

2

Appreciation Month" in Pennsylvania. 

3

WHEREAS, Dairy farming is the primary economic driver behind

4

the number one industry in Pennsylvania, which is agriculture;

5

and 

6

WHEREAS, Dairy farming is a proud family tradition in

7

Pennsylvania, where 98% of dairy farms are owned by families and

8

depend on family labor; and 

9

WHEREAS, Dairy farming is a demanding way of life that

10

requires healthy workers with a strong work ethic in order to

11

produce the high-quality milk and other wholesome nutritional

12

products enjoyed by Pennsylvania's families and the citizens of

13

other states; and

WHEREAS, There are more than 8,500 dairy businesses in

2

Pennsylvania, both large and small, and 555,000 cows, which

3

produce more than 10 billion pounds of milk each year; and 

4

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania dairy industry and related

5

businesses contribute more than $4 billion annually to the

6

State's economy, supporting 40,000 quality, family-sustaining,

7

stable jobs for individuals in rural communities; and 

8

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania dairy farms produce milk locally and

9

export it to cities and other states along the east coast of the

10

United States, and this revenue is then reinvested in the local

11

community; and 

12

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's dairy farms serve as the ideal model

13

for sustainable rural economic development, providing

14

stimulation to both State and local economies; and 

15

WHEREAS, Studies show that dairy foods, when consumed as part

16

of a healthy diet, improve overall diet quality and may help to

17

reduce the risk of certain diseases; and 

18

WHEREAS, Generations of Pennsylvania farmers have been

19

dedicated to the preservation of the environment, helping to

20

maintain the high quality of this Commonwealth’s natural

21

resources; and

22

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's many picturesque dairy farms have

23

been a mainstay in the renowned beauty of the rural Pennsylvania

24

landscape for centuries; therefore be it 

25

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

26

month of June 2010 as "Dairy Farmers Appreciation Month" in

27

Pennsylvania and recognize the outstanding contributions of

28

Pennsylvania's dairy farmers to the historical, cultural,

29

environmental and economic success of this Commonwealth.
