| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Expressing condolences upon the death of Lawrence J. McDonald, |
2 | Captain of the Fire Department of the City of Philadelphia, |
3 | and extending gratitude for his many years of service to the |
4 | people of the City and County of Philadelphia. |
5 | WHEREAS, Lawrence J. McDonald, retired Captain of the |
6 | Philadelphia Fire Department, died suddenly on Wednesday, April |
7 | 7, 2010, at 60 years of age; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Prior to his retirement, Captain McDonald served the |
9 | City of Philadelphia as a member of the Philadelphia Fire |
10 | Department for 31 years, beginning in 1973 and ending on July 1, |
11 | 2004; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Captain McDonald was given 22 various assignments in |
13 | the Philadelphia Fire Department over his 31-year career; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Appointed to the Philadelphia Fire Department on |

1 | April 23, 1973, he was promoted to Lieutenant on August 2, 1982, |
2 | and ultimately ascended to the rank of Captain on November 2, |
3 | 1987; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Captain McDonald was known for many displays of |
5 | heroism while in service to the city; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Captain McDonald risked his life in 1999 when he |
7 | rescued two adults and one child from a burning house in |
8 | Northeast Philadelphia; and |
9 | WHEREAS, In 1989, Captain McDonald revived a three-month-old |
10 | child during a Christmas Eve fire; and |
11 | WHEREAS, A unit citation was issued to Captain McDonald on |
12 | January 7, 1987, for his acts of heroism in working with fellow |
13 | fire personnel to rescue more than 30 civilians trapped in a |
14 | high-rise building; and |
15 | WHEREAS, In 1979, Captain McDonald rescued a nurse and an |
16 | unconscious patient lying on the fifth floor ledge of Episcopal |
17 | Hospital; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Captain McDonald was a Marine Veteran of the Vietnam |
19 | War and a member of Firefighters Local 22, A.O.H. Division 39 |
20 | and the Elks of North Wildwood; and |
21 | WHEREAS, A parishioner of Christ the King Roman Catholic |
22 | Church in Northeast Philadelphia, Captain McDonald raised his |
23 | family with a respect for church, community and family; and |
24 | WHEREAS, Captain McDonald was the proud parent of |
25 | Philadelphia Police Officer Patrick McDonald, who died in the |
26 | line of duty on September 23, 2008; and |
27 | WHEREAS, Captain McDonald died while training for the Tour de |
28 | Shore, which is a charity event designed to raise money for |
29 | charities, such as the Police Survivor's Fund, that benefits |
30 | families of fallen Philadelphia police officers; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Captain McDonald is survived by his wife, Patricia, |
2 | and his daughter, Megan; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Captain McDonald was preceded in death by his son, |
4 | Michael; and |
5 | WHEREAS, For his many years of public service, Captain |
6 | Lawrence J. McDonald has earned the gratitude of this |
7 | Commonwealth; therefore be it |
8 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express |
9 | condolences upon the death of Lawrence J. McDonald, Captain of |
10 | the Fire Department of the City of Philadelphia, and extend |
11 | gratitude for his many years of service to the people of the |
12 | City of Philadelphia; and be it further |
13 | RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to |
14 | Mrs. Patricia McDonald, 3608 Whitehall Lane, Philadelphia, PA |
