A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the month of May 2010 as "Beef Month" in

2

Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, The beef industry in Pennsylvania contributes $2

4

billion to the economy each year and is an integral part of our

5

leading industry, agriculture; and

6

WHEREAS, Beef producers in this Commonwealth are helping to

7

ensure a quality food supply for consumers through voluntary

8

quality assurance programs that help to ensure safe, nutritious

9

meat products; and

10

WHEREAS, This segment of the farm community plays a vital

11

role in keeping agricultural land in production by adopting

12

environmental practices that enhance the land and preserve its

13

viability for future generations; and

WHEREAS, Two of the largest United States beef packers are

2

located in this Commonwealth, accounting for more than 1 million

3

head of cattle, beef and dairy origin, harvested annually; and 

4

WHEREAS, Consumer demand for beef has been increasing

5

steadily in recent years due to the promotion, research and

6

education efforts paid for by beef producers through a $1

7

checkoff program for each animal sold; and

8

WHEREAS, Beef continues to be a safe, wholesome part of the

9

dinner and lunch menus in homes and restaurants across this

10

Commonwealth; and

11

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's cattle industry is agile, committed

12

and responsive to animal and human health issues, assuring

13

producers and consumers alike that issues concerning food safety

14

and illness can be addressed promptly, professionally and

15

thoroughly; and 

16

WHEREAS, All beef produced under the PA Preferred Program is

17

certified by the Pennsylvania Beef Quality Assurance Program;

18

therefore be it

19

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

20

month of May 2010 as "Beef Month" in Pennsylvania.
