A RESOLUTION

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the charter of the Omicron

2

Delta Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,

3

Incorporated.

4

WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, the first

5

African-American Greek-lettered organization, was founded by

6

seven young men in 1906 on the campus of Cornell University

7

during a historical period when racial intolerance and

8

discrimination permeated the country; and

9

WHEREAS, The stated mission of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,

10

Incorporated is to develop leaders and promote brotherhood and

11

academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for

12

our communities; and

13

WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated has a

14

membership that exceeds 175,000 initiates and has counted among

15

its members such distinguished individuals as: the Rev. Dr.

16

Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. William Edward Burghardt (W.E.B)

DuBois, the Honorable Thurgood Marshall, Mr. Duke Ellington and

2

Dr. Cornel West; and

3

WHEREAS, The Omicron Delta Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha

4

Fraternity, Incorporated was chartered on April 26, 1985, in

5

Philadelphia by Mr. Selvin L. Gordon, Mr. James B. Harris and

6

Mr. Howard Burch; and

7

WHEREAS, The members of the Omicron Delta Lambda chapter of

8

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated continue to hold the

9

concepts of brotherhood and fraternity foremost in their minds

10

and hearts while maintaining the fraternity's role as a positive

11

force in the Philadelphia community; and

12

WHEREAS, The Omicron Delta Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha

13

Fraternity, Incorporated participates in many worthwhile causes

14

such as Project Alpha; Go To High School, Go To College Program;

15

Big Brothers/Big Sisters; Boy Scouts of America; Selvin Gordon

16

Scholarship Fund; March of Dimes Walk; Martin Luther King Day of

17

Service; Back to School Supply Drive; Adopt-A-Family and A

18

Voteless People is a Hopeless People; therefore be it

19

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the

20

Omicron Delta Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,

21

Incorporated on the 25th anniversary of its charter.
