A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of September 2010 as "Colorectal Cancer

2

Examination Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 

3

WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is both the third most common

4

cancer diagnosis and the second leading cause of cancer death in

5

the United States of America; and

6

WHEREAS, A family history of colorectal cancer or a personal

7

history of an inflammatory bowel disease is considered to be

8

among the biggest risk factors for the disease, with other risk

9

factors including obesity, alcohol consumption, red and

10

processed meat consumption and diabetes; and

11

WHEREAS, Men are 35% more likely to get colorectal cancer

12

than women and African Americans are 20% more likely to get this

cancer than other races or ethnicities; and

WHEREAS, It is estimated that as many as 60% of colorectal

3

cancer deaths could be prevented if all men and women 50 years

4

of age or older were screened routinely, for colorectal

5

examinations save lives; this is because colorectal cancer

6

develops from precancerous polyps in the colon and rectum which

7

can be seen in examinations and removed before they turn into

8

cancer; and

9

WHEREAS, Screening tests also can find colorectal cancer

10

early, when treatment works best; and

11

WHEREAS, Since the 1990s, colorectal cancer incidence and

12

mortality rates have been declining and the five-year survival

13

rate has been increasing; and

14

WHEREAS, Early colon cancer detection through sigmoidoscopies

15

and, where indicated, colonoscopies has contributed to the

16

decline in the death rate; and

17

WHEREAS, Use of these examinations and good dietary habits

18

should be encouraged through awareness programs; therefore be it 

19

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

20

month of September 2010 as "Colorectal Cancer Examination

21

Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
