| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating May 1, 2010, as "Childhood Stroke Awareness Day" in |
2 | Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Neonatal strokes, strokes occurring before or after |
4 | birth, occur at the rate of one in 4,000 births each year, with |
5 | 12% of infants dying due to stroke; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Pediatric strokes occurring in children under two |
7 | years of age account for 25% of all childhood strokes; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Causes of stroke include inherited clotting |
9 | disorders, congenital heart disease, sickle cell disease, |
10 | prematurity and head trauma; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Symptoms of childhood stroke include seizure, coma, |
12 | apnea, poor feeding, infantile spasms, very specific hand |
13 | preference, delays in gross motor development, tightness or |
14 | restricted movement in large joints or language delays with some |
15 | symptoms appearing years later; and |

1 | WHEREAS, More than half of child stroke victims have serious, |
2 | long-term neurological disabilities, including paralysis of one |
3 | side of the body, seizures, speech defects, vision problems, |
4 | learning difficulties and behavioral problems which may require |
5 | ongoing physical therapy and surgeries; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Since very little is known about the cause, |
7 | treatment and prevention of childhood stroke, only through |
8 | medical research can effective treatment and prevention |
9 | strategies for pediatric stroke be identified and developed; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and early treatment of childhood |
11 | stroke are essential for a complete recovery and prevention of |
12 | recurrence; therefore be it |
13 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 1, |
14 | 2010, as "Childhood Stroke Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania; and |
15 | be it further |
16 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all citizens |
17 | to support the efforts, programs, services and advocacy the |
18 | Pediatric Stroke Network provides as it strives to enhance |
19 | public awareness of childhood stroke. |
