INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MARCH 5, 2010  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of March 2010 as "Hibernian Heritage

2

Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, The Ancient Order of Hibernians, the oldest Irish

4

Catholic organization in America, was founded concurrently in

5

New York and Pennsylvania in May 1836; and

6

WHEREAS, Their roots can be traced back 300 years earlier

7

when their ancestors risked their lives to keep the Irish

8

language, culture and Roman Catholic religion alive in their

9

beloved Ireland; and

10

WHEREAS, The twin goals of the Ancient Order of Hibernians

11

are to assist in the reunification of Ireland and promote Irish

12

culture; and

13

WHEREAS, The Ancient Order of Hibernians seeks to aid the

14

newly arrived Irish, both economically and socially, and is

among the first to welcome new Irish immigrants to the United

2

States; and

3

WHEREAS, There are more than 80,000 members of the Hibernians

4

in 46 states, Canada and Ireland; and

5

WHEREAS, The Lackawanna County Board of Ancient Order of

6

Hibernians oversees the six divisions of Hibernians across the

7

length and breadth of Lackawanna County that has more than 450

8

members; and

9

WHEREAS, Those six honorable divisions that do good works are

10

named as follows: John F. Kennedy, division one of Scranton;

11

Msgr. William Farrell, division two of Carbondale; The O'Neill

12

Brothers, division three of Minooka; Paul Hook O'Malley,

13

division four of West Scranton; Firefighter Joseph Flannery,

14

division five of Taylor; and Father Patrick D. Healey, division

15

six of Scranton; and

16

WHEREAS, The Ancient Order of Hibernians of Lackawanna County

17

supports a multitude of charities, such as the Women's Resource

18

Center, multiple myeloma cancer research and various food

19

pantries; therefore be it

20

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

21

month of March 2010 as "Hibernian Heritage Month" in

22

Pennsylvania.
