INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, FEBRUARY 25, 2010  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Designating 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2010,

2

as "Earth Hour" in Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, "Earth Hour" was launched in Sydney, Australia, in

4

2007, when more than 2 million homes and businesses, as a

5

statement of concern regarding the impact of climate change and

6

global warming, turned off their lights for one hour; and

7

WHEREAS, In 2008, "Earth Hour" became a worldwide initiative

8

as more than 400 cities and more than 50 million people around

9

the globe turned off their lights for that designated hour; and

10

WHEREAS, Included in this effort were such notable landmarks

11

as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, the Sydney Opera House in

12

Australia, the Wat Arun Buddhist Temple in Bangkok, Thailand,

13

the Coliseum in Rome, Italy, and the Golden Gate Bridge in San

14

Francisco, California; and

15

WHEREAS, "Earth Hour" 2010 is going to be an opportunity to

"Vote Earth" with a goal of having more than 1 billion people

2

turn off their lights, signifying that 1 billion people on the

3

planet, regardless of where they live, are willing to take a

4

stand and be counted in the effort to reduce the consequences of

5

climate change, improving the earth for future generations; and

6

WHEREAS, At present, more than 200 countries and thousands of

7

cities, community organizations, businesses and homes have

8

pledged to participate in "Earth Hour" 2010, sending a clear

9

message to their leaders that they want them to join with other

10

world leaders to develop a strategy to address the impact of

11

climate change when they meet in Mexico later this year for the

12

2010 Global Climate Change Conference; therefore be it

13

RESOLVED, That the General Assembly designate the hour of

14

8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2010, as "Earth

15

Hour" in Pennsylvania; and be it further

16

RESOLVED, That the people, governmental and commercial

17

entities of this Commonwealth actively participate in "Earth

18

Hour" 2010 and "Vote Earth" by turning out their lights for that

19

one hour on Saturday, March 27, 2010.
