| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Memorializing Congress to pass House Resolution 4197, the Gold |
2 | Star Mothers National Monument Act of 2009. |
3 | WHEREAS, Gold Star Mothers is a term that arose during World |
4 | War I to honor and recognize those mothers whose sons or |
5 | daughters died from injury or illness while serving in the armed |
6 | forces of the United States during World War I; World War II; |
7 | the Korean Conflict; the Vietnam War; the war in the Balkans; |
8 | the peacetime attack on the U.S.S. Cole by terrorists; and the |
9 | conflicts in the Middle East, including Operation Desert Storm, |
10 | Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom; and |
11 | WHEREAS, American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., is the official |
12 | national service organization of Gold Star Mothers that was |

1 | begun in 1928 and continues because of the bond of mutual love, |
2 | sympathy and support of the many loyal, capable and patriotic |
3 | mothers who, while sharing their grief and their pride, have |
4 | channeled their time, efforts and gifts to lessening the pain of |
5 | others by honoring our deceased servicemen and servicewomen, |
6 | assisting our veterans, supporting our nation and helping each |
7 | other to heal; and |
8 | WHEREAS, In 1936, President Franklin Roosevelt recognized |
9 | Gold Star Mothers for their strength and inspiration to this |
10 | country; and |
11 | WHEREAS, A Gold Star Mother from Pennsylvania, Mollie Snyder, |
12 | was selected as a model for a relief that is part of the |
13 | monument honoring Gold Star Mothers from all armed services in |
14 | all wars in which the United States has engaged since World War |
15 | I; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Snyder, of Berks County, was the mother of Pfc. |
17 | Walter H. Snyder, Jr., who served in the Korean Conflict and |
18 | died from wounds suffered during action; and |
19 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Snyder served as president of the Berks County |
20 | Chapter of Gold Star Mothers from the late 1950s until May 2008 |
21 | and, upon her retirement, was made Honorary President of the |
22 | chapter at that time; and |
23 | WHEREAS, Sculptor Andrew L. Chernak, a Pennsylvanian, chose |
24 | Walter and her as models for a bronze relief to be mounted along |
25 | the pathway to the centerpiece statue at the proposed Gold Star |
26 | Mothers Monument in Washington, D.C.; and |
27 | WHEREAS, The artist, who met Mrs. Snyder in 2004 at a Gold |
28 | Star Mothers function, selected her for her dignity and inner |
29 | strength; and |
30 | WHEREAS, The monument is expected to be completed in 2011; |

2 | WHEREAS, Congress is presently considering House Resolution |
3 | 4197, the Gold Star Mothers National Monument Act of 2009; |
4 | therefore be it |
5 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives memorialize |
6 | Congress to pass House Resolution 4197, the Gold Star Mothers |
7 | National Monument Act of 2009; and be it further |
8 | RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to |
9 | the Congressional Delegation from Pennsylvania. |
