INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JULY 6, 2009  

A RESOLUTION

Congratulating the Pittsburgh Penguins upon their victorious

2009 National Hockey League season.

WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Penguins captured their third Stanley

Cup, the first since 1992, after scoring a 2-1 victory over the

Detroit Red Wings in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals before

20,066 spectators at the Joe Louis Arena on June 12, 2009; and

WHEREAS, This was the first National Hockey League (NHL)

title rematch since the Edmonton Oilers and the New York

Islanders met in 1983 and 1984; and

WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Penguins are the first NHL team since

the 2000-2001 New Jersey Devils to make it to the finals in

consecutive years; and

WHEREAS, History has shown that the Pittsburgh Penguins have

never lost a Game 7 in franchise history; and

WHEREAS, Not since the 1971 Montreal Canadians has a visiting

team won the Stanley Cup on an opposing team's playing field;

and

WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Penguins clinched a return trip to

the Stanley Cup Finals with a four-game sweep of the Carolina

Hurricanes on May 26, 2009, in the Eastern Conference finals;

and

WHEREAS, At 21 years of age, Pittsburgh Penguin Captain

Sidney Crosby became the youngest player to win the Stanley Cup

after finishing only his third full NHL season; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the

Pittsburgh Penguins upon their victorious 2009 National Hockey

League season.
