A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life and service of Action News Sports Director

2

Gary Papa and expressing sincere condolences upon his death. 

3

WHEREAS, Gary Papa was born in Buffalo, New York, and began

4

his broadcasting career as a morning news anchor while a student

5

at Cornell University; and

6

WHEREAS, Gary Papa received his undergraduate degree in

7

history and political science at Cornell University, and later

8

obtained his law degree from the University of Buffalo Law

9

School; and

10

WHEREAS, Gary Papa started his sportscasting career in 1976

11

in Buffalo and Steubenville, Ohio, before joining the Action

12

News team in Philadelphia in 1981; and

WHEREAS, Gary Papa spent the first nine years of his Action

2

News career as the weekend sports anchor, often spending three

3

days a week reporting from the field covering the Phillies,

4

Flyers, Sixers and Eagles; and

5

WHEREAS, Beginning in 1983, Gary Papa hosted the long-running

6

weekend show, Prime Time; and 

7

WHEREAS, In 1990, Gary Papa was named Action News Sports

8

Director, which was a position he held until his untimely death;

9

and

10

WHEREAS, Gary Papa announced on air in 2004 that he had been

11

fighting prostate cancer for a year; and

12

WHEREAS, Even as cancer visibly took its toll on Gary Papa,

13

he continued to deliver sports news to Philadelphians as often

14

as he could, while serving as cochairman of the annual Run 4

15

Your Life Father's Day benefit on the Parkway for the Foundation

16

for Breast and Prostate Cancer; and 

17

WHEREAS, Gary Papa passed away on June 19, 2009, at 54 years

18

of age after a five-year battle with prostate cancer, leaving

19

behind his wife Kathleen, two sons, Tucker and Nathaniel, his

20

parents and a brother; and

21

WHEREAS, Gary Papa's zeal for sharing sports news with the

22

residents of the City of Brotherly Love merits the appreciation

23

and gratitude of the House of Representatives; therefore be it 

24

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life of

25

Gary Papa and express condolences upon his death on June 19,

26

2009; and be it further 

27

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

28

Ms. Kathleen Papa.
