A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the need for osteoporosis awareness in Pennsylvania.

2

WHEREAS, The month of May 2009 was "National Osteoporosis

3

Awareness Month," with emphasis on the development of innovative

4

treatments to help people who have osteoporosis; and

5

WHEREAS, Osteoporosis, a growing problem in the United

6

States, is a major threat to 40 million Americans, 80% of whom

7

are women; and

8

WHEREAS, Bones weakened by osteoporosis can lead to

9

compression fractures of the spine, deformity, loss of height,

10

decreased quality of life and easily fractured bones; and

11

WHEREAS, Osteoporosis is the underlying cause of

12

approximately 2 million fractures annually; and

13

WHEREAS, One in two women and one in four men over the age of

50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their advanced

2

years; and

3

WHEREAS, Health issues from osteoporosis-related fractures

4

cost $19 million each year; and

5

WHEREAS, With its aging population, Pennsylvania and its

6

citizens need to stay abreast of osteoporosis issues and the

7

development of innovative treatments; therefore be it

8

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

9

need for osteoporosis awareness in Pennsylvania.
