A RESOLUTION

Honoring Insulators Local 14 upon the occasion of the 100th

2

anniversary of its establishment.

3

WHEREAS, Insulators Local 14 organized in 1909 when a small

4

group of asbestos workers came together to preserve the right to

5

work in the City of Philadelphia; and

6

WHEREAS, By 1914, Local 14 had grown to include 250 members;

7

and

8

WHEREAS, In its early years, Local 14 helped to build the

9

Philadelphia Stock Exchange Building, Class and Nachod Brewery,

10

the Marcus Hook oil refinery, 30th Street Station and the PSFS

11

Building, among others, and worked on the many ships built in

12

South Philadelphia that were vital to the Allied efforts in

13

World Wars I and II; and

14

WHEREAS, After World War II, as the City of Philadelphia

grew, modernized and prospered, Local 14 members where fully

2

employed and integral to the revitalization of Center City

3

Philadelphia; and

4

WHEREAS, During the 1960s and 1970s, information on the

5

danger of asbestos became known and Local 14 members remained

6

employed and involved in innovative programs to maintain safe

7

work environments; and

8

WHEREAS, Local 14 members worked on several large projects in

9

the Philadelphia area during the 1980s and 1990s, including

10

Philadelphia Airport renovations, construction of the QVC

11

complex in West Chester and building Liberty Place One and Two

12

and the Gulf Oil refinery, reaching 100% employment; and

13

WHEREAS, Local 14 entered the 21st century committed to the

14

employment, health and safety of its members; and

15

WHEREAS, Local 14 supports Philadelphia as a leader in local

16

building trades and in the local AFL-CIO; therefore be it

17

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor this

18

vibrant and essential union, Insulators Local 14, upon the 100th

19

anniversary of its establishment.
