A RESOLUTION

Honoring the 50th anniversary of the Three Rivers Arts Festival

2

in the City of Pittsburgh.

3

WHEREAS, The Three Rivers Arts Festival was founded by the

4

Carnegie Museum of Art as a way to celebrate and promote the

5

local cultural community; and

6

WHEREAS, In 2008, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust assumed the

7

responsibility of presenting the Three Rivers Arts Festival; and

8

WHEREAS, The Three Rivers Arts Festival has grown into a $1.1

9

million annual event that each year generates a $19 million

10

economic benefit for the region; and

11

WHEREAS, More than 600,000 men, women and children attend the

12

Three Rivers Arts Festival in Pittsburgh each June; and

13

WHEREAS, Eighty-five percent of the Three Rivers Arts

14

Festival's total audience made a special trip to downtown

Pittsburgh just to attend the festival; and

2

WHEREAS, The Three Rivers Arts Festival presents free

3

concerts, an artists' market, public art projects and

4

collaborative projects with many local agencies; and

5

WHEREAS, The Three Rivers Arts Festival is the largest

6

presenter of free arts programming in southwestern Pennsylvania;

7

and

8

WHEREAS, More than 1,000 individual artists participate in

9

the festival with an estimated 20% of the total living in the

10

Pittsburgh region; and

11

WHEREAS, The Three Rivers Arts Festival is a major

12

contributor to the Commonwealth tourism industry with visitors

13

booking more than 6,000 hotel rooms each year during the

14

festival; and

15

WHEREAS, The Three Rivers Arts Festival is the gateway to the

16

arts for millions of people in Pittsburgh and southwestern

17

Pennsylvania, as well as more than 90,000 individuals who travel

18

to visit the Three Rivers Arts Festival from outside the region;

19

therefore be it

20

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the 50th

21

anniversary of the Three Rivers Arts Festival; and be it further

22

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

23

the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, 803 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh,

24

PA 15222.
