A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of June 2009 as "Pennsylvania Animal

2

Shelter Appreciation Month."

3

WHEREAS, These animal shelters may be known as, but are not

4

limited to being titled, Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty

5

to Animals (SPCAs), humane societies, animal leagues and

6

rescues; and

7

WHEREAS, The first humane animal shelter in the United States

8

was opened in this Commonwealth in 1870; and

9

WHEREAS, The first veterinary clinic associated with an

10

animal shelter in the United States was opened in this

11

Commonwealth in 1910; and

12

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is indebted to local animal shelters

13

for the invaluable contributions they make each year in

protecting animals from inhumane treatment by enforcing section

2

5511 of the Pennsylvania Crimes Code regarding cruelty to

3

animals; and

4

WHEREAS, The animal shelters in this Commonwealth promote

5

kindness toward animals through humane education; and

6

WHEREAS, The animal shelters in Pennsylvania educate

7

legislators on behalf of the animals in this Commonwealth; and

8

WHEREAS, The animal shelters provide low-cost spay/neuter

9

programs to prevent pet overpopulation; and

10

WHEREAS, The animal shelters in this Commonwealth provide

11

unwanted animals with a second chance at new and loving homes;

12

and

13

WHEREAS, Animal shelters can celebrate "Pennsylvania Animal

14

Shelter Appreciation Month" with special events for their

15

members and communities; therefore be it

16

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives thank the animal

17

shelters in this Commonwealth for their fine and compassionate

18

work on behalf of animals and extend sincere admiration and

19

respect; and be it further

20

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

21

month of June 2009 as "Pennsylvania Animal Shelter Appreciation

22

Month."
