INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, APRIL 20, 2009  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Designating May 9, 2009, as "Letter Carrier Food Drive Day" in

2

Pennsylvania; and commending the National Association of

3

Letter Carriers for its humanitarian efforts to eliminate

4

hunger.

5

WHEREAS, On Saturday, May 9, 2009, the National Association

6

of Letter Carriers will conduct the 17th annual NALC "Stamp Out

7

Hunger" food drive to combat hunger; and

8

WHEREAS, This is the largest one-day food drive in the

9

nation, which is held in all 50 states and territories of the

10

United States; and

11

WHEREAS, On that day, letter carriers will collect

12

nonperishable donations as they deliver mail along their postal

13

routes; and

14

WHEREAS, The food will be collected in over 10,000

15

communities by nearly 1,500 local branches of the postal union,

16

along with rural carriers and other volunteers; and

WHEREAS, Donations will be delivered to food banks, pantries

2

and shelters that serve the area where the donations are

3

collected; and

4

WHEREAS, The summer months are a particularly critical time

5

for millions of children whose school lunch programs are

6

suspended until fall and their families must find alternate

7

sources of nutrition; and

8

WHEREAS, Letter carriers see these families every day as they

9

deliver the mail and this food drive is one way to help

10

alleviate their plight; and

11

WHEREAS, Postal patrons are encouraged to participate by

12

leaving donations by their mailboxes on May 9, 2009; and

13

WHEREAS, Cosponsors of the drive are the United States Postal

14

Service, the Campbell Soup Company, Valpak/Cox Target Media,

15

Inc., local United Ways, the AFL-CIO and America's Second

16

Harvest food bank network; and

17

WHEREAS, Since its inception in 1993, the nationwide drive

18

has collected and delivered over three-quarters of a billion

19

pounds of food to help hungry families and last year carriers

20

collected 73.2 million pounds of food, which is the third

21

consecutive year the effort has exceeded 70 million pounds;

22

therefore be it

23

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 9,

24

2009, as "Letter Carrier Food Drive Day" in Pennsylvania; and be

25

it further

26

RESOLVED, That the National Association of Letter Carriers

27

and its cosponsors be commended for their humanitarian efforts

28

to stamp out hunger; and be it further

29

RESOLVED, That the citizens of this Commonwealth be commended

30

for their past participation in this food drive and encouraged

to generously contribute to this year's effort to help feed the

hungry.
