A RESOLUTION

  

1

Congratulating The Pennsylvania State University Men's

2

Basketball Team for winning the 2009 National Invitation

3

Tournament Championship.

4

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State University Nittany Lions

5

Men's Basketball Team set a school record by winning 27 regular

6

season games during the 2008-2009 season; and

7

WHEREAS, The Nittany Lions were among 32 teams selected for

8

the Men's Division I National Invitation Tournament; and

9

WHEREAS, The Nittany Lions demonstrated their skill and

10

dedication through five tournament wins, including defeating

11

long-time school rival Notre Dame in the tournament semi-finals;

12

and

WHEREAS, Senior forward Jamelle Cornley earned the

2

designation of NIT Most Valuable Player, despite playing the

3

last three games with a partially separated left shoulder; and

4

WHEREAS, With their 69-63 victory over Baylor in Madison

5

Square Garden on April 2, 2009, the Nittany Lions Men's

6

Basketball Team earned its first-ever national tournament title

7

and second postseason championship; and

8

WHEREAS, The team, led by coach Ed DeChellis and his

9

assistants, trainers and managers, consisted of seniors Jamelle

10

Cornley, Stanley Pringle and Will Leiner and red-shirt senior

11

Danny Morrissey, sophomores Talor Battle, Adam Highberger, Jeff

12

Brooks, Steve Kirkpatrick and red-shirt sophomores David

13

Jackson, Andrew Jones and Andrew Ott and freshmen Chris Babb,

14

Cammeron Woodyard and Billy Oliver; and

15

WHEREAS, Through their dedication, sportsmanship and

16

performance, these 14 young men and their coaches enhanced the

17

rich and proud tradition of Pennsylvania State University

18

athletics; and

19

WHEREAS, According to an independent report, in 2008,

20

Pennsylvania State University's overall net impact on the

21

Pennsylvania economy was more than $7.7 billion, greater than

22

any other single enterprise or organization, generating more

23

than $621 million in tax revenue to the Commonwealth; and 

24

WHEREAS, As reported by the New York Times, Penn State fans

25

traveled to New York City aboard 36 buses and "turned the

26

neutral Garden into a virtual home game," including boisterous

27

chants of "We Areā€¦Penn State!"; and

28

WHEREAS, The accomplishments of this team, as athletes and as

29

students, are worthy of acclaim and commendation, and young men

30

and women across this Commonwealth should seek to emulate the

success of the Nittany Lions Men's Basketball Team; therefore be

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate The

4

Pennsylvania State University Nittany Lions Men's Basketball

5

Team for winning the 2009 National Invitation Tournament; and be

6

it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to

The Pennsylvania State University Men's Basketball Coach Ed

9

DeChellis, Athletic Director Timothy M. Curley and University

10

President Graham B. Spanier.
