| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring Ed Snider and the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation for |
2 | offering a program to children that aims to instill life- |
3 | enhancing values such as teamwork, positive self-esteem, the |
4 | importance of hard work and respect for themselves and their |
5 | teammates. |
6 | WHEREAS, Ed Snider, with amazing dynamism and daring, single- |
7 | handedly convinced the National Hockey League in 1966 to locate |
8 | an expansion team in Philadelphia, which provided land for a new |
9 | arena that became known as the Spectrum; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Mr. Snider's Philadelphia Flyers franchise |
11 | eventually became the foundation of one of sport's preeminent |
12 | organizations in the world, Comcast-Spectacor; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Comcast-Spectacor quickly changed the national |
14 | landscape of sports by creating the first all-day, all-night |
15 | regional sports network known as Comcast SportsNet, which has |

1 | since expanded to major markets throughout this nation, |
2 | including Chicago, Illinois and New York, New York; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Out of respect for the sport of hockey and the |
4 | athletes who play it, Mr. Snider established the Ed Snider Youth |
5 | Hockey Foundation; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Although Comcast-Spectacor's success is testimony to |
7 | Mr. Snider's vision and entrepreneurial skills, the creation of |
8 | the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation stands as his true legacy; |
9 | and |
10 | WHEREAS, The Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation's mission is |
11 | to use the sport of hockey to help educate young people on how |
12 | to succeed in the game of life; and |
13 | WHEREAS, The foundation's program is provided free of charge |
14 | to both boys and girls who reside in inner-city neighborhoods |
15 | within Philadelphia and nearby Camden, New Jersey; and |
16 | WHEREAS, The foundation provides its hockey aspirants with |
17 | the required equipment, as well as ice time and experienced |
18 | coaching; and |
19 | WHEREAS, The foundation's program has already touched the |
20 | lives of more than 1,000 children, reflecting Mr. Snider's |
21 | strong commitment to give back to the community that has |
22 | steadfastly supported him; and |
23 | WHEREAS, In November 2008, Mr. Snider announced that the Ed |
24 | Snider Youth Hockey Foundation would assume operation and |
25 | programming of three ice-skating rinks in Philadelphia, which |
26 | were targeted for possible closure; and |
27 | WHEREAS, The foundation will oversee all ice hockey programs |
28 | at the Scanlon Ice Rink, the Laura Sims Statehouse at Cobbs |
29 | Creek and the Rink at Simons Recreation and Teen Access Center, |
30 | and provide free ice hockey instruction and leagues, including |

1 | all equipment as well as supplemental academic services at no |
2 | charge to participants; and |
3 | WHEREAS, The foundation is working with the City of |
4 | Philadelphia to procure land for a hub facility, encompassing a |
5 | state-of-the-art computer lab, classrooms, administrative |
6 | offices, multiple ice services and a public space designated for |
7 | meetings and related community functions; and |
8 | WHEREAS, The Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation is well |
9 | positioned to continue its successful program of teaching young |
10 | people the importance of staying in school, staying on a |
11 | progressive path and the power of giving back to one's |
12 | community; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Many of the children who benefit from the Ed Snider |
14 | Youth Hockey Foundation will one day help to build a stronger |
15 | Philadelphia; therefore be it |
16 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and |
17 | honor Ed Snider and the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation for |
18 | their industrious efforts on behalf of children to make the |
19 | Philadelphia community an even better place in which to live, |
20 | work and play. |
