A RESOLUTION

Expressing condolences upon the death of Police Officer Richard

2

Matthews, a heroic son of Pennsylvania, who died in the line

3

of duty in Wilmington, North Carolina, on February 18, 2009.

4

WHEREAS, Police Officer Richard Matthews, of the Wilmington,

5

North Carolina Police Department, responded to help a fellow

6

officer arrest drug suspects shortly after 1 a.m. on February

7

18, 2009; and

8

WHEREAS, As he drove east on Shipyard Boulevard in Wilmington

9

on his way to the scene, Officer Matthews lost control of his

10

car, crashed and died from injuries sustained in the crash; and

11

WHEREAS, Preliminary investigations by the Wilmington Police

Department and the North Carolina Highway Patrol indicate that

2

Officer Matthews lost control of his vehicle upon swerving to

3

miss a box that lay in the middle of the road; and

4

WHEREAS, A native son of Pennsylvania, Officer Matthews knew,

5

even while a student at Liberty High School, that he wanted to

6

be a policeman; and

7

WHEREAS, After serving with the New York City Police

8

Department for two years, Officer Matthews was hired by the City

9

of Wilmington late in 2006 and received a commendation for

10

carrying a 96-year-old woman to safety from a burning building;

11

and

12

WHEREAS, Although only 28 years of age at the time of his

13

death, Officer Matthews was a distinguished police officer and

14

heroic native son of this Commonwealth; and

15

WHEREAS, He is survived by his parents, Margaret and Dennis

16

Matthews, of Bethlehem; therefore be it

17

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express

18

condolences upon the death of Police Officer Richard Matthews, a

19

heroic son of Pennsylvania, who died in the line of duty in

20

Wilmington, North Carolina, on February 18, 2009; and be it

21

further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

23

his parents, Margaret and Dennis Matthews, 4650 Kathi Drive,

24

Bethlehem, PA 18017.
