INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MARCH 23, 2009  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of April 2009 as "Pennsylvania Community

2

College Month."

3

WHEREAS, More than 415,000 students are currently enrolled in

4

credit and noncredit programs at this Commonwealth's 14

5

community colleges; and

6

WHEREAS, More than 68,900 students are currently enrolled in

7

over 2,450 distance learning courses and programs offered by the

8

community colleges, allowing students to build their academic

9

credentials and certifications while maintaining their work

10

schedules and family responsibilities; and

11

WHEREAS, Community colleges offer and support dual enrollment

of more than 9,100 high school students, representing half of

2

this Commonwealth's school districts; and

3

WHEREAS, Community colleges facilitate high-technology career

4

pathways with seamless curricula by collaborating in 2+2+2

5

project grants; and

6

WHEREAS, Community colleges have developed more than 1,000

7

articulation agreements to ensure that students seamlessly

8

transition from the community college to a four-year degree; and

9

WHEREAS, Community colleges offer individualized credit and

10

noncredit courses and programs that enhance the work force

11

pipeline and stimulate this Commonwealth's economy; and

12

WHEREAS, Community colleges are responding to the current

13

economic downturn by implementing tuition waiver programs to aid

14

unemployed workers in obtaining crucial skills and knowledge for

15

reentry into the work force; and

16

WHEREAS, Employers throughout this Commonwealth have

17

contracted with community colleges to provide training for more

18

than 37,400 employees; therefore be it

19

RESOLVED, That, in special recognition of community colleges

20

and their exemplary role in meeting the educational and training

21

needs of so many residents of this Commonwealth, the House of

22

Representatives designate the month of April 2009 as

23

"Pennsylvania Community College Month" and encourage all

24

citizens to recognize, appreciate and support the contributions

25

these institutions make to their communities and to this

26

Commonwealth.
