A RESOLUTION

Expressing opposition of the House of Representatives to the

2

closing of the Scotland School for Veterans' Children.

3

WHEREAS, For more than 110 years, the Scotland School for

4

Veterans' Children has adhered to its mission of offering a

5

quality education, while driving students to achieve their full

6

potential and provide them with lifelong opportunities; and

7

WHEREAS, The Scotland School for Veterans' Children's budget

8

is primarily funded by the State, but the Governor's proposed

9

budget for fiscal year 2009-2010 contains no State money for

10

Scotland School for Veterans' Children, resulting in the

11

announcement that the school will close in June 2009; and

12

WHEREAS, The Scotland School for Veterans' Children, a

13

residential boarding school, provides a well-rounded and

14

nurturing environment for children of military families, with

15

educational guidance, a balance of academics and a wide array of

16

extracurricular activities; and

WHEREAS, The Scotland School for Veterans' Children is

2

accredited and provides students with a wide range of career

3

opportunities, as well as preparation for college, with more

4

than 85% of graduating seniors moving on to a two-year or four-

5

year college; and

6

WHEREAS, With two active wars currently being fought and the

7

presence of the United States Armed Forces stationed all over

8

the world, many future veterans will have family members who

9

will benefit from the Scotland School for Veterans' Children;

10

therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives strongly oppose

12

the closing of the Scotland School for Veterans' Children and

13

call upon Governor Rendell and the Department of Military and

14

Veterans Affairs to provide that the Scotland School for

15

Veterans' Children may continue to receive State funding and not

16

only remain open for years to come, but to expand its programs

17

to serve more children; and be it further

18

RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to

19

the Honorable Edward G. Rendell, Governor, and Major General

20

Jessica L. Wright, Adjutant General.
