A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the Allentown Patriots Athletic Association for more

2

than 60 years of dedicated community service.

3

WHEREAS, On April 26, 2008, the Allentown Patriots Athletic

4

Association commemorated the 60th anniversary of its charter;

5

and

6

WHEREAS, The first team was formed in 1940 by the Patriot

7

Order Sons of America, a fraternal organization that became

8

keenly interested in the game of softball; and

9

WHEREAS, From this humble beginning arose an athletic

10

association that has sponsored 14 teams annually, built a sports

11

community building and a park and offered 450 athletic contests

12

in recent seasons to athletes ranging in age from "youngster" to

13

"old-timer" in both softball and hardball; and

WHEREAS, The association has created an acclaimed program in

2

fastpitch softball; and

3

WHEREAS, Earl F. Hunsicker Bicentennial Park, also known as

4

Pates Park, opened on August 25, 1976, primarily through the

5

efforts of the Allentown Patriots Athletic Association; and

6

WHEREAS, Pates Park now hosts all of the association's home

7

athletic events; and

8

WHEREAS, Pates Park has also hosted world-class women's

9

softball, featuring Team USA, National Pro Fastpitch and the

10

Greek Olympic Team and has hosted three national fastpitch

11

softball tournaments, in 1976, 1978 and 1984; and

12

WHEREAS, The Allentown Patriots Athletic Association is to be

13

commended for its ongoing commitment to provide opportunities

14

for youth and adults in sports and valuable lessons in teamwork,

15

leadership and responsibility; therefore be it

16

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

17

Allentown Patriots Athletic Association for more than 60 years

18

of dedicated community service.
