AN ACT

  

1

Designating State Route 997 within the limits of the Borough of

2

Mont Alto as the Sgt. Edward W. Shaffer Memorial Highway.

The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

4

hereby enacts as follows:

5

Section 1.  Sgt. Edward W. Shaffer Memorial Highway.

6

(a)  Findings.--The General Assembly finds and declares as

7

follows:

8

(1)  Sgt. Edward W. Shaffer from Franklin County died

9

December 27, 2006, at 23 years of age, from severe burn

10

injuries sustained during combat by a roadside bomb on

11

November 13, 2006, while serving in Iraq. He was assigned to

 


1

the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat

2

Team, 1st Armored Division during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He

3

was the first soldier from Franklin County to die in the war.

4

(2)  Sgt. Shaffer was a 2002 graduate of Waynesboro Area

5

Senior High School. He enlisted in the Army in 2003, served

6

in Germany and Kuwait before going to Iraq and served in Iraq

7

for approximately eight months before the explosion.

(3)  Sgt. Shaffer was a gunner in a Bradley tank during

9

operations in Ramadi, the capital of Anbar, about 70 miles

10

west of Baghdad when the roadside bomb exploded.

11

(4)  Sgt. Shaffer was awarded two Purple Heart medals

12

during his service with the United States Army.

(b)  Designation.--State Route 997 within the limits of the

14

Borough of Mont Alto, Franklin County, is hereby designated as

the Sgt. Edward W. Shaffer Memorial Highway.

16

(c)  Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and

17

maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the highway

18

designated under subsection (b) to traffic in both directions.

Section 2.  Effective date.

20

This act shall take effect in 60 days.
