AN ACT

Designating a portion of State Route 11 from the bridge carrying

State Route 11 over the Susquehanna River in Point Township,

Northumberland County, known as the Barry King Memorial

4

Bridge, to the Montour County line as the Sgt. Brett D. Swank

<--

Memorial Highway.

The General Assembly finds and declares as follows:

7

(1)  Brett D. Swank graduated from Shikellamy High School

8

and was accepted to Colorado State University, but deferred

9

attendance because he wanted to serve his country by

10

enlisting in the United States Army.

11

(2)  Brett D. Swank began basic training in the United

12

States Army on September 11, 2001, and upon completion of

13

training became an Army Ranger.

14

(3)  Sergeant Swank was assigned to 1st Battalion, 509th

15

Infantry Regiment, Fort Polk, Louisiana.

16

(4)  Sergeant Swank deployed to Iraq in July 2004 in

17

support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

18

(5)  While in the courageous service of his country,

19

Sergeant Swank was killed in Baghdad, Iraq, on January 24,

2005, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his

2

position.

The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

4

hereby enacts as follows:

Section 1.  Sgt. Brett D. Swank Memorial Highway.

(a)  Designation.--The portion of highway State Route 11 from

the bridge carrying State Route 11 over the Susquehanna River in

Point Township, Northumberland County, known as the Barry King

9

Memorial Bridge to the Montour County line is hereby designated 

10

as the Sgt. Brett D. Swank Memorial Highway.

(b)  Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and

12

maintain signs to traffic in both directions to indicate the

13

designation under subsection (a).

Section 2.  Effective date.

15

This act shall take effect in 60 days.
