| AN ACT |
| |
1 | Designating a portion of Route 11 from the Barry King Memorial |
2 | Bridge to the Montour County line as the Sgt. Brett D. Swank |
3 | Memorial Highway. |
4 | The General Assembly finds and declares as follows: |
5 | (1) Brett D. Swank graduated from Shikellamy High School |
6 | and was accepted to Colorado State University, but deferred |
7 | attendance because he wanted to serve his country by |
8 | enlisting in the United States Army. |
9 | (2) Brett D. Swank began basic training in the United |
10 | States Army on September 11, 2001, and upon completion of |
11 | training became an Army Ranger. |
12 | (3) Sergeant Swank was assigned to 1st Battalion, 509th |
13 | Infantry Regiment, Fort Polk, Louisiana. |
14 | (4) Sergeant Swank deployed to Iraq in July 2004 in |
15 | support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. |
16 | (5) While in the courageous service of his country, |
17 | Sergeant Swank was killed in Baghdad, Iraq, on January 24, |
18 | 2005, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his |
19 | position. |

1 | The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania |
2 | hereby enacts as follows: |
3 | Section 1. Sgt. Brett D. Swank Memorial Highway. |
4 | (a) Designation.--The portion of highway Route 11 from the |
5 | Barry King Memorial Bridge to the Montour County line is hereby |
6 | designated the Sgt. Brett D. Swank Memorial Highway. |
7 | (b) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and |
8 | maintain signs to traffic in both directions to indicate the |
9 | designation under subsection (a). |
10 | Section 2. Effective date. |
11 | This act shall take effect in 60 days. |
