A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing October 16, 2008, as "ONE Campaign Day" in 2 Pennsylvania, in order to raise awareness of the societal 3 impact of poverty. 4 WHEREAS, ONE is a campaign of Americans of all beliefs and of 5 every walk of life united as one to help make poverty a part of 6 history; and 7 WHEREAS, ONE is a campaign of more than 2.4 million people 8 from all 50 states and more than 100 of America's most well- 9 known and respected nonprofit, advocacy and humanitarian 10 organizations; and 11 WHEREAS, ONE believes that health care professionals and 12 communities are the centerpiece of any strong and vibrant 13 society; and 14 WHEREAS, The ONE campaign brings together people of all 15 countries, beliefs and walks of life who want to help save and 16 improve the lives of those suffering from extreme poverty and
1 global disease; and 2 WHEREAS, ONE is a nonpartisan effort that believes that, 3 together, we can help transform the future of an entire 4 generation in the world's poorest countries; and 5 WHEREAS, ONE strives to raise public awareness about the 6 issues of global poverty, hunger and disease; and 7 WHEREAS, Every three seconds, a child dies from illnesses 8 associated with extreme poverty; and 9 WHEREAS, Nearly 1 billion people live on less than $1 a day, 10 and an estimated 16,000 children die each day in the poorest 11 countries of the world; and 12 WHEREAS, We can address these issues by recognizing the 13 devastating impact that extreme poverty and preventable disease 14 have globally and by beginning to take action in our local 15 communities and in our State to bring about change to the world; 16 and 17 WHEREAS, ONE is working nationwide in communities, colleges 18 and churches to educate and ask America's leaders to increase 19 efforts to fight global AIDS and extreme poverty; and 20 WHEREAS, ONE believes in the best American tradition of 21 helping others help themselves and now is the time to join with 22 other countries in a historic pact for compassion and justice to 23 help the poorest people of the world overcome AIDS and extreme 24 poverty; and 25 WHEREAS, ONE believes in committing ourselves, one person, 26 one voice, one vote at a time, to making a better, safer world 27 for all people; therefore be it 28 RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize October 16, 2008, as "ONE 29 Campaign Day" in Pennsylvania in order to raise awareness for 30 the people living in the world's poorest areas and to educate 20080S0404R2490 - 2 -
