SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 362 Session of 2008


        INTRODUCED BY BRUBAKER, KITCHEN, FERLO, STACK, RAFFERTY,
           TARTAGLIONE, A. WILLIAMS, ERICKSON, REGOLA, BOSCOLA, STOUT,
           FUMO, PUNT, MADIGAN, DINNIMAN, O'PAKE, GREENLEAF, WAUGH,
           FONTANA, C. WILLIAMS, BAKER, COSTA, FOLMER, PIPPY AND
           KASUNIC, JULY 2, 2008

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, JULY 2, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the month of August 2008 as "Pennsylvania Produce
     2     Month".

     3     WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's vegetable industry generates
     4  more than $141 million in revenues to our economy; and
     5     WHEREAS, Approximately 3,500 farm families manage about
     6  48,000 acres which produce more than 200,000 tons of vegetables
     7  for fresh and processing use; and
     8     WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's vegetable growers are national
     9  leaders in the production of pumpkins, cantaloupes, fresh market
    10  sweet corn, and fresh market tomatoes and the processing of
    11  sweet corn and snap beans; and
    12     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania vegetables are not only "Simply
    13  Delicious" but also "Simply Nutritious" in providing important
    14  vitamins, fiber and other dietary components that are essential
    15  to a healthy, balanced diet; and
    16     WHEREAS, Health authorities have long encouraged increased


     1  consumption of vegetables for both nutritional and disease
     2  prevention purposes; and
     3     WHEREAS, Fresh Pennsylvania vegetables are available in
     4  abundant supply and peak quality at community farmers' markets,
     5  roadside farm markets and supermarkets throughout this
     6  Commonwealth during the month of August; and
     7     WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's vegetable industry is committed
     8  to using integrated pest management and other good agricultural
     9  practices to produce, in an environmentally sound manner,
    10  vegetables and vegetable products that are both nutritious and
    11  safe; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize August
    13  2008 as "Pennsylvania Produce Month" and urge all citizens to
    14  enjoy this Commonwealth's abundant supply of "Simply Delicious,
    15  Simply Nutritious" fresh and processed vegetable products while
    16  recognizing the industry's contributions to our economy and our
    17  health.
