A RESOLUTION 1 Designating May 2008 as "Skin Cancer Awareness Month" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the 4 United States; and 5 WHEREAS, Skin cancer accounts for about half of all cancers 6 diagnosed in the United States; and 7 WHEREAS, More than one million cases of skin cancer are 8 diagnosed in the United States each year; and 9 WHEREAS, Everyone is at risk for skin cancer regardless of 10 skin color; and 11 WHEREAS, The use of tanning beds can increase the risk for 12 skin cancer; and 13 WHEREAS, The best way to lower the risk of melanoma skin 14 cancer is to practice sun safety and avoid long periods of 15 exposure to intense sunlight; and 16 WHEREAS, The cure rate for skin cancer is high if detected 17 early; and
1 WHEREAS, An effective and painless method of early detection 2 is the self-examination of one's skin, being alert to changes in 3 number, size, shape or color of spots on the skin; therefore be 4 it 5 RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage all citizens of this 6 Commonwealth to practice sun safety; and be it further 7 RESOLVED, That the Senate urge all citizens of this 8 Commonwealth to perform a regular examination of their skin and 9 to see their doctor if they notice any changes in the number, 10 size, shape or color of spots; and be it further 11 RESOLVED, That the Senate urge the Department of Health to 12 promote the practice of sun safety and self-examination; and be 13 it further 14 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate May 2008 as "Skin Cancer 15 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania and direct that copies of this 16 resolution be transmitted to the Department of Health, the 17 Pennsylvania Division of the American Cancer Society and the 18 Pennsylvania Academy of Dermatology and Dermatological Surgery.
