        INTRODUCED BY ORIE, WONDERLING, PILEGGI, PUNT, TOMLINSON,
           BRUBAKER, TARTAGLIONE, PIPPY, KASUNIC, HUGHES, STOUT, STACK,
           LAVALLE, PICCOLA, RAFFERTY, BOSCOLA, DINNIMAN, GREENLEAF,
           C. WILLIAMS, LOGAN, O'PAKE, FONTANA, ARMSTRONG, REGOLA,
           KITCHEN, MELLOW, WAUGH, ERICKSON AND GORDNER, MARCH 12, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing March 2008 as "Women's History Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Women of every race, class and ethnic background
     4  have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of
     5  this nation in countless ways; and
     6     WHEREAS, Women have played and continue to play a critical
     7  economic, cultural and social role in every sphere of the life
     8  of this nation by constituting a significant portion of the
     9  labor force working inside and outside of the home; and
    10     WHEREAS, Women have played a unique role throughout the
    11  history of this nation by providing the majority of the
    12  volunteer labor force; and
    13     WHEREAS, Women were particularly important in the
    14  establishment of early charitable, philanthropic and cultural
    15  institutions in this nation; and
    16     WHEREAS, Women of every race, class and ethnic background

     1  served as early leaders in the forefront of every major
     2  progressive social change movement; and
     3     WHEREAS, Women have been leaders, not only in securing the
     4  rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the
     5  abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial
     6  labor movement, the civil rights movement and the peace
     7  movement, all of which created a more fair and just society for
     8  all; and
     9     WHEREAS, Lisa Baker, Lisa M. Boscola, Jane M. Earll, Shirley
    10  M. Kitchen, Jane Clare Orie, Tina M. Tartaglione, Patricia H.
    11  Vance, LeAnna Washington, Mary Jo White and Connie Williams have
    12  earned recognition for public service as members of the Senate
    13  of this Commonwealth, comprising 20% of its membership; and
    14     WHEREAS, Lisa Bennington, Karen Beyer, Louise Williams
    15  Bishop, Karen Boback, Michele Brooks, Mauree Gingrich, Julie
    16  Harhart, Kate Harper, Susan C. Helm, Babette Josephs, Deberah
    17  Kula, Beverly Mackereth, Sandra Major, Kathy M. Manderino,
    18  Jennifer L. Mann, Barbara McIlvaine Smith, Phyllis Mundy,
    19  Cherelle L. Parker, Tina Pickett, Marguerite Quinn, Kathy Rapp,
    20  Carole Rubley, RoseMarie Swanger, Katie True, Chelsa Wagner,
    21  Katherine M. Watson and Rosita C. Youngblood have earned
    22  recognition for public service as members of the House of
    23  Representatives comprising 12% of its membership; and
    24     WHEREAS, Lieutenant Governor, Catherine Baker Knoll;
    25  Secretary of Public Welfare, Estelle B. Richman; Secretary of
    26  Aging, Nora Dowd Eisenhower; Secretary of Environmental
    27  Protection, Kathleen Alana McGinty; Adjutant General, Major
    28  General Jessica L. Wright; State Treasurer, Robin L. Weissmann;
    29  Chancellor of the State System of Higher Education, Dr. Judy G.
    30  Hample; President Judge of the Superior Court, Honorable Kate

     1  Ford Elliott; and President Judge of the Commonwealth Court,
     2  Honorable Bonnie Brigance Leadbetter are all women who hold
     3  prominent positions in State government; and
     4     WHEREAS, Despite these contributions, the role of women in
     5  history has often been overlooked and undervalued in the
     6  literature, teaching and study of American history; and
     7     WHEREAS, In 1987, and each successive year thereafter, the
     8  Congress of the United States has declared March as "National
     9  Women's History Month"; therefore be it
    10     RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize March 2008 as "Women's
    11  History Month" in Pennsylvania.
