        INTRODUCED BY MELLOW, FERLO, HUGHES, STOUT, PUNT, KASUNIC,
           TARTAGLIONE, FONTANA, PIPPY, MUSTO, C. WILLIAMS, BOSCOLA,
           LAVALLE, TOMLINSON, BAKER, WASHINGTON, ERICKSON, RAFFERTY,
           FOLMER, PILEGGI, GREENLEAF, O'PAKE, ORIE, KITCHEN AND STACK,
           MARCH 10, 2008

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, MARCH 10, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of March 2008 as "Deep Vein Thrombosis
     2     Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania in memory of journalist
     3     David Bloom.

     4     WHEREAS, Deep vein thrombosis is a condition that occurs when
     5  a blood clot forms in one of the large veins, which may result
     6  in a fatal pulmonary embolism; and
     7     WHEREAS, Deep vein thrombosis is a serious but preventable
     8  medical condition; and
     9     WHEREAS, Deep vein thrombosis occurs in approximately 2
    10  million Americans each year; and
    11     WHEREAS, Fatal pulmonary embolism causes more deaths each
    12  year than breast cancer and AIDS combined; and
    13     WHEREAS, Complications from deep vein thrombosis take up to
    14  200,000 American lives each year; and
    15     WHEREAS, Fatal pulmonary embolism may be the most common
    16  preventable cause of hospital death in the United States; and
    17     WHEREAS, Risk factors for deep vein thrombosis include cancer

     1  and certain heart or respiratory diseases; and
     2     WHEREAS, Pulmonary embolism is the leading cause of maternal
     3  death associated with childbirth; and
     4     WHEREAS, According to a survey conducted by the American
     5  Public Health Association, 74% of Americans are unaware of deep
     6  vein thrombosis; and
     7     WHEREAS, National Broadcasting Company correspondent David
     8  Bloom died of a fatal pulmonary embolism while covering the war
     9  in Iraq; and
    10     WHEREAS, Melanie Bloom, widow of David Bloom, and more than
    11  35 members of the Coalition to Prevent Deep-Vein Thrombosis are
    12  working to raise awareness of this silent killer; and
    13     WHEREAS, The designation of March as "Deep Vein Thrombosis
    14  Awareness Month" in honor of David Bloom would raise public
    15  awareness about this life-threatening but preventable condition;
    16  therefore be it
    17     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of March 2008
    18  as "Deep Vein Thrombosis Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania to
    19  honor the memory of David Bloom; and be it further
    20     RESOLVED, That the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania officially
    21  recognize the importance of raising awareness of deep vein
    22  thrombosis; and be it further
    23     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    24  the Coalition to Prevent Deep-Vein Thrombosis.
