A RESOLUTION 1 Designating November 15, 2007, as "Pennsylvania Geographic 2 Information System Day." 3 WHEREAS, Geospatial technologies are critical tools for 4 effective decision making by Federal and State governments at 5 all levels for public health, land-use planning, transportation, 6 agriculture, environmental protection, law enforcement, economic 7 development, education, work force analysis and many other 8 critical tasks of government, business and academe; and 9 WHEREAS, Geospatial technologies are required in all homeland 10 security and incident response systems to support threat 11 assessment, planning and response capabilities and the ability 12 to visualize information using intelligent maps; and 13 WHEREAS, Geospatial technologies define and describe critical 14 features of people, places and things in this Commonwealth, such 15 as street addresses, municipal boundaries, streams and 16 watersheds, labor markets, land-use zones, property boundaries, 17 public utilities, census tracts, transportation networks, oil
1 and gas well locations, wildlife management areas and additional 2 business requirements; and 3 WHEREAS, Geospatial technology applications foster data 4 sharing and government initiatives, and provide an analysis for 5 a visualization tool for this Commonwealth; and 6 WHEREAS, Linking geospatial information among agencies and 7 across levels of government offers a unique opportunity to 8 positively affect homeland security efforts and economic growth, 9 to protect our environment and to better prepare this 10 Commonwealth for unexpected natural disasters such as floods; 11 therefore be it 12 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate November 15, 2007, as 13 "Pennsylvania Geographic Information System Day."
