No. 213 Session of 2007


        INTRODUCED BY FONTANA, LOGAN, FERLO, WASHINGTON, STOUT,
           TARTAGLIONE, KASUNIC, M. WHITE, COSTA, ORIE, RAFFERTY, MUSTO,
           GREENLEAF, BRUBAKER, ARMSTRONG, ERICKSON, O'PAKE, PILEGGI,
           STACK, C. WILLIAMS, LAVALLE AND PIPPY, NOVEMBER 13, 2007

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, NOVEMBER 13, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing and congratulating the Student Conservation
     2     Association on its 50th anniversary of public service to
     3     parks and public lands in the Pittsburgh area, throughout
     4     this Commonwealth and across the United States.

     5     WHEREAS, Over the past 50 years, the Student Conservation
     6  Association has placed high school and college students from
     7  this Commonwealth in conservation internships in parks and
     8  public lands throughout the nation; and
     9     WHEREAS, Founded in 1957 by Elizabeth C. Titus Putnam as part
    10  of her senior thesis, the Student Conservation Association,
    11  begun with the assistance of Martha Hayne Talbot, provides
    12  opportunities for young people to learn about environmental
    13  conservation by volunteering in parks and public lands; and
    14     WHEREAS, The Student Conservation Association's mission is to
    15  build new generations of conservation leaders and inspire
    16  lifelong stewardship of the environment and communities by
    17  engaging young people through hands-on service; and
    18     WHEREAS, Since its founding 50 years ago, the Student

     1  Conservation Association has helped to protect vital habitats,
     2  threatened wildlife and other at-risk resources in United States
     3  parks, forests and urban green spaces; and
     4     WHEREAS, It is now the largest student conservation service
     5  program in the United States, placing volunteers in all 50
     6  states, as well as internationally in Canada, Mexico, Brazil,
     7  Germany and Latvia; and
     8     WHEREAS, In 2006, the Student Conservation Association had
     9  nearly 4,000 student volunteers working 1.6 million service
    10  hours, serving 511 sites with 975 resource management partners,
    11  including the Gettysburg National Military Park and the
    12  Southwestern Pennsylvania Watershed Association; and
    13     WHEREAS, The Student Conservation Association has
    14  approximately 50,000 alumni, many of whom have dedicated their
    15  careers to environmental stewardship and preservation as
    16  teachers, resource managers, park rangers and businesspeople;
    17  and
    18     WHEREAS, The Student Conservation Association has been
    19  recognized for its achievements in conservation and youth
    20  development by, among others, the White House, the National Park
    21  Service, the United States Forest Service, the Wilderness
    22  Society, the National Wildlife Federation, the National Fire
    23  Plan Council and the Garden Club of America; and
    24     WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is home to one of seven regional
    25  offices for the Student Conservation Association and works with
    26  more than 30 local land management partners from across this
    27  Commonwealth; and
    28     WHEREAS, More than 20 million people have directly benefited
    29  from conservation services organized and directed by the Student
    30  Conservation Association; therefore be it

     1     RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize and congratulate the
     2  Student Conservation Association on its 50th anniversary of
     3  public service to parks and public lands in the Pittsburgh area,
     4  throughout this Commonwealth and across the United States.
