        INTRODUCED BY WOZNIAK, RAFFERTY, LAVALLE, FONTANA, KITCHEN,
           ROBBINS, COSTA, ERICKSON, WASHINGTON, M. WHITE, MELLOW,
           PIPPY, ORIE, BOSCOLA, STOUT, GREENLEAF, TARTAGLIONE, O'PAKE,
           ARMSTRONG, KASUNIC, PILEGGI, EARLL AND FERLO,

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, SEPTEMBER 24, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of September 23 through 30, 2007, as
     2     "University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Week" in Pennsylvania
     3     in recognition of its 80th anniversary of providing higher
     4     education in western Pennsylvania and congratulating its
     5     incoming president, Dr. Jem Spectar.

     6     WHEREAS, Founded in 1927, the University of Pittsburgh at
     7  Johnstown (UPJ) is celebrating 80 years of providing higher
     8  education and employment in western Pennsylvania; and
     9     WHEREAS, UPJ is home to 2,750 full-time and 350 part-time
    10  students per year and, with a retention and graduation rate that
    11  surpasses the national average of like institutions, has
    12  graduated 17,250 students since 1927; and
    13     WHEREAS, With more than 40 undergraduate degrees, UPJ has
    14  been ranked for five consecutive years by U.S. News and World
    15  Report Best Colleges as 3rd in the North in Comprehensive
    16  Colleges and Universities; and
    17     WHEREAS, UPJ has $15 million dollars for scholarships and
    18  endowments, and its present capital campaign is part of the $2

     1  billion campaign of the University of Pittsburgh, which is one
     2  of only eight American universities pursuing capital campaigns
     3  of $2 billion or more; and
     4     WHEREAS, UPJ is a major economic resource to the citizens of
     5  southwestern Pennsylvania, with a direct impact of more than $6
     6  million in the Cambria and Somerset region; and
     7     WHEREAS, Further impacting the region, 55% of UPJ students
     8  and 83% of UPJ faculty and staff donate their time to charitable
     9  nonprofit activities, with more than $720,000 in-kind gifts of
    10  volunteer time; and
    11     WHEREAS, In conjunction with the celebration of its 80th
    12  anniversary, UPJ is celebrating the inauguration of its fifth
    13  president, Dr. Jem Spectar, on September 28, 2007; and
    14     WHEREAS, University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Mark A.
    15  Nordenberg has high praise for Dr. Spectar, calling him "a
    16  visionary leader and celebrated teacher with the skills and
    17  experience necessary to build effectively upon the strengths of
    18  our Johnstown campus and to enrich the lives of students,
    19  faculty, staff and administration"; therefore be it
    20     RESOLVED, That the Senate, in recognition of the many
    21  accomplishments and contributions of UPJ, designate the week of
    22  September 23 through 30, 2007, as "University of Pittsburgh at
    23  Johnstown Week" in Pennsylvania and congratulate its incoming
    24  president, Dr. Jem Spectar.
