A RESOLUTION 1 Commending Widener University, Westminster College, Thiel 2 College and Keystone College for establishing scholarships 3 for children of soldiers killed in combat. 4 WHEREAS, Act 129 of 1998, the Police Officer, Firefighter, 5 Correction Employee and National Guard Member Child Beneficiary 6 Education Act, provides for the free education of children of a 7 National Guard member or certain other emergency personnel 8 killed in the line of duty at any community college, State-owned 9 or State-related institution of higher education; and 10 WHEREAS, On December 9, 2004, Widener University, whose main 11 campus is located in Chester, Delaware County, established 12 Widener CARES (Children of Active and Reserve Military Personnel 13 Educational Scholarship), providing a free undergraduate 14 education to any qualified dependent of a member of the United 15 States Armed Forces who was killed in action during Operation 16 Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom; and
1 WHEREAS, Senate Resolution 213 and House Resolution 549 of 2 the 2005-2006 Legislative Session congratulated Widener 3 University on the establishment of the scholarship program and 4 encouraged other colleges and universities to emulate the 5 program; and 6 WHEREAS, On October 28, 2006, Westminster College in New 7 Wilmington, Lawrence County, established the Patriots 8 Scholarship Program, providing full tuition for a four-year 9 undergraduate degree at Westminster College for the dependent 10 children of United States military personnel who were killed in 11 action in Afghanistan or Iraq; and 12 WHEREAS, On December 20, 2006, Thiel College in Greenville, 13 Mercer County, established the Fallen Heroes Scholarship 14 Program, providing full tuition for four years to dependent 15 children of military personnel killed in action during 16 operations in the Middle East and emergency medical services 17 providers filled in the performance of their duties; and 18 WHEREAS, On March 30, 2007, Keystone College in La Plume, 19 Lackawanna County, established the Keystone Children of Active 20 and Reserve Military Personnel Educational Scholarship (CARES) 21 program, providing full tuition for four years for the dependent 22 children of United States military personnel killed in action in 23 either Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom; 24 and 25 WHEREAS, These fine academic institutions recognize the 26 importance of civic responsibility; and 27 WHEREAS, These scholarships--as well as scholarships provided 28 under Act 129 of 1998--provide some relief in times of 29 uncertainty for the families of our fallen heroes; therefore be 30 it 20070S0134R1151 - 2 -
